Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

I remember back 13 years or so ago having to wait for about 24 hours while the new Quake 2 game downloaded on my 14.4 internet - I also remember having had doom 2 the first day that I had my first PC. What now passes for a first person shooter is so much down to these two games - and more besides - but to say that in only those 13 short years we've come from those pixelated, 2 axis'd run and shooters to games like COD4 in 2007 is something near to amazing. COD4 is the pinacle of modern day first person shooters - that is all there is to it. The single player game has a brilliant story, easy controls and stunning visuals - the audio is occasionally offputting, but this is all that I can find to say about this game that isn't perfect. Then, when you've eventually finished the campaign game (which took me about 4 days on "normal" - short, but better than the 4 hours or so for Halo 3) there is an absolutely stunning multiplayer game. Complete with 12 or so game modes, and with a league system to climb not only once - but twice (once in the fabled "prestige mode"), the game is truly a thing of beauty that should be played by everyone who has even a passing interest in the genre. Nothing better ever before - and there's only one small thing that's a problem. 9.8/10
